Inspiration Behind The Birth You In Love Project

How Did ‘The Birth You In Love Project’ Start?

The Birth You In Love Project was set up after the birth of my second child featured on BBC1’s Childbirth: All or Nothing in Feb 2015.

It’s a crowdfunded project available for free. I thank the people who believed in this project, those who contributed to it and those who starred in it. You all rock and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Their names are all listed on the credits at the end of each film.

There is no doubt there are key things most people do not know about birth.

We don’t learn about birth in school. Or I didn’t at least I didn’t.

I distinctly remember being shown in biology a woman giving birth on her back screaming whilst looking scared.

Was this meant to put us off? Probably.

It put me off to be fair.

Nobody told me that birth can be an amazing, empowering transformative process.

No-one said we mostly birth best when using gravity and upright positions.

No-one said birth happens best when it’s undisturbed.

Or when we feel confident in our body’s ability to birth our babies or when we trust the process and when we’re fully supported by those around us.

We look around and too many people are having a really rough time when it comes to birthing our babies.

We are told in terms of what we are or are not allowed to do but the truth is we are grown women, able to make our own decisions.

And I believe when we are presented with the right information, we are able to make the decisions right for us.

I believe if we knew these things, people would prepare in a better way for birth and we would have better outcomes.

These videos have come at a great time.

Trials are starting to happen round the country where women will be put in charge of their own budgets.

When you understand how birth works and you examine how you feel about it, you give yourself the best chance of getting a better birth experience.

When you know what’s what, you can know your options and make decisions that are right for you.

So many people just bury their head in the sand and pretend it’s not going to happen.

I’ve got news for you. It is going to happen, one way or another, so prepare as best you can!

Here is a 3 minute version…

I promise I wasn’t as quiet as this for the whole thing but I did it without drugs using techniques I teach.

After the show aired, I got incredible feedback . Still to this day, people contact me to say the show inspired them to  do more research and to thank me for being a catalyst for their own calmer experiences.

But So much I wanted to say got lost in the edit. 12 days of filming was reduced to 15 minutes.

So, I CROWDFUNDED to make a series of mini-vids on preparing for birth; my top tips, key things you might want to consider if you are wanting to avoid a medicalised birth.

And this was

The BYIL Project White

I remember being pregnant for the first time and seeing a video of mums giving birth in calm using self hypnosis for the first time.

I couldn’t believe it! I wanted to know why they were giving birth in a completely different way to anyone I’d seen on TV before.

What had they done differently? What had they done to prepare? What were their secrets?

I searched and searched and yet, I found the information really difficult to obtain.

I certainly didn’t get it from my normal mainstream birth education classes.

I got it from connecting with wise women and from researching high and low.

I don’t think it’s fair to be sending women to give birth without these key bits of information.

What Is ‘The Birth You In Love Project’

So the Birth You In Love Project is series of videos, based on the acronym EMPOWER helping women understand how they can support themselves to have a better AND safer birthing experience.

It’s not a full course or a comprehensive look at all the things you might learn. It’s simply a springboard to help you understand a bit more about birth and to inspire you to do your own research.

The videos break down the key areas you might want to consider when having a baby if you’re wanting to stack the odds in your favour for things to go as smoothly as possible.

Here is a summary of the vids:

E – Environment (creating an environment that’s conducive to the birthing process)

M – Mental Preparation (having mental tools to manage the sensations, understanding emotions, hormones)

P – Physical Preparation (the importance of staying active and knowing what birth positions may be useful)

O – Owning Your Birth and Taking Control

W – Water (staying hydrated, considering labouring and birthing in water and staying fluid as birth doesn’t always go to Plan A)

E – Extension (of yourself), i.e. your support network; making sure your support is also optimally prepared and you know where to seek what you need

R – Relaxation (the importance of relaxation and breathing)

A Huge Thank You!!!

I will be eternally grateful to all those who believed in the project, starred in the videos and helped them along their way.

Dr Tracey Cooper, Mark Harris, Emma Gleave, Natalie Qureshi, Michelle Every,, Jo Lambers
