3 Birth Visualisations – Power Tools For Birth

One of the things I’m really passionate about is helping my clients put together a mental toolkit so they can manage the sensations of birth. Notice I used the word sensations rather than the word ‘pain’. I’m not adverse to using the word pain. It’s just that I think sensations describes it better.

The thing is not all women experience pain. I’ve certainly had clients who have said the sensations were strong or intense but not painful.

Some women even experience the sensations as pleasure!

And knowing that helped me give birth to my children. Being open to the idea that the next one might be orgasmic was one of the techniques that got me through.

I always say to my clients that even though you might have felt the last ‘contraction’ or ‘surge’ or ‘wave’ (whatever you want to call it) was really strong you’re over it. You’ve done that one and you’re one step closer to meeting your baby.

Hypnobirthing Techniques Help

I used ‘hypnobirthing’ techniques to give birth to both my children. The first time I gave birth, I’ll be honest with you, it hurt more than I thought it would. I tell you this because women are really strong. If you’re reading this and you identify as a woman, let me tell you, we are strong and ultimately, this is what we were designed to do.

But even though the sensations were stronger than I thought they might be, they were were manageable. I lived to tell the tale. I had a full toolkit of ways to manage the sensations I was feeling; breathing techniques, visualisations and affirmations. I perceived movements in my body that I was feeling were natural and needed to happen to get my baby out. I didn’t use any pharmaceutical pain relief although I’m certainly not adverse to anyone wanting to use any, of course.

Even if you are planning to use pharmaceutical pain relief, if you plan to go into labour naturally you’re still going to need some techniques to manage the sensations early on.

So what techniques can help?

Breathing slowly and deeply, perhaps some visualisations and maybe some affirmations (positive statements) you’re practiced during pregnancy so you can easily access them when you need them.

My first baby’s birth took longer than I thought it would. It took 36 1/2 hours from feeling the first twinges to actually having my baby. Which sounds like a lot. But when I got tired I lay down and rested between surges. I rested my mind. It was still manageable.

And the second time I gave birth, the one on the BBC1 documentary “Childbirth All Or Nothing”, it hurt much less than I thought it would. This time it took only 6 1/2 hours from feeling the first twinges.

I believe this one was so much shorter because I was exactly in the environment I wanted to be in, with exactly who I wanted to be with. There were no disturbances. No surprises. No strangers walking in. I was simply ‘allowed’ to get on with it. I felt less inhibited and I definitely made more noise. No-one put me under any time pressure. And this time I understood more about how my body was actually working so I could work with it.

And on my course, I teach all of this knowledge and a mental toolkit of techniques to help you relax deeply and stay focused stacking the odds in your favour to maximise the possibility of a calm and comfortable birthing experience.

I always say birth requires 100% concentration and focus. Ideally you need to focus 100% on what your body is doing, so you can move with it and do what your body needs to do. This gives you the best chance of giving birth normally. To feel free, feeling powerful and uninhibited.

Should you choose to have monitoring, maybe you could ask for this to be as unobtrusive as possible so you are minimally disturbed from your trip to ‘labourland’?

So without further ado let’s look at…

3 Birth Visualisations To Rock Your Birth

You don’t need to use them all. Different things appeal to different people. Perhaps just choose one or two to practice?

  1. When the surge comes, imagine a wave building. And as the surge gets stronger, the wave gets bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger until eventually you reach the top and the wave falls away. Your on the other side. You did it. You’re over that one. And now, you reset your mind until the next one comes. Totally relaxed. Feeling grateful that each wave is bringing you a little closer to your little one. Your muscles work best when they are relaxed.Waves
  2.  Imagine a goddess positioned in front you. She is beautiful, centred and grounded. She is strong and powerful. Her feminine energy is divine. She is clear. She is YOU! Imagine the energy that runs though her runs through you too.goddess
  3. When the sensations get stronger and you are starting to need to breathe through them, the sensations you are feeling are actually your uterus is drawing up to allow your baby to get out. So, one idea is on the in-breath you can imagine in your mind bubbles rising and then as you breathe out slowly though your mouth, you might like to imagine blowing away the bubbles as they continue to float upwards .

And my TOP TIP for visualising is…

It’s not important to actually ‘see’ the pictures in your mind, just to know that they are there is enough.

I hope that helps and you’ve found these ideas useful!

If you’d like some more ideas, my next Birth You In Love group Hypnobirthing course is starting in Chorlton on Thursday 18th May. It’s a 4 week course.
